If you’ve ever come up with pictures that show spots where there aren’t any, and the spots won’t go away no matter how hard you try, you might think your camera is haunted.

Apparently, many eBay sellers own these critters, as you’ll see lots of item descriptions with statements like “Any spots are from the camera, not on the item.” Sometimes they’ll refer to these spots as camera ghosts.

Are their cameras really haunted? Is yours? Probably not. But it can definitely seem like it, especially if it only happens on some shots and not others, and it keeps happening after you’ve cleaned and dusted your lens.

What they—and you—are dealing with is a problem that seems to be endemic with digital cameras, and especially today’s popular mini and micro-mini cameras. Positioning an ultra-strong light, which a flash definitely is, near a camera lens can cause a whole slew of problems. On tiny digital cameras, the flash is almost right on top of the lens. When it goes off, the light bounces off any dust particles that are floating in front of the lens. The result is out-of-focus spots. Ghosts, if you will.

You’ll typically see camera spots on long shots, not closeups, which has to do with technical things that you don’t need to know about to fix the problem. The best way to avoid them is to quit using on-camera flash. If you have to use it, don’t move around a lot before you take your pictures. That will give the dust a chance to settle down as much as possible before shooting.
